M A T E R I A L   G I R L   D A Y   D R E A M

I'd like to take a brief intermission from the traveling/european life updates to share something that's been on my mind lately. I may be in a nearly perfect place - an entirely different, sunny and happy environment compared to the grey of the Pacific Northwest - but my desires have not changed all that much. If anything, being here has only increased them. My thoughts often wander with all of the quiet time here, and I find myself wishing for light and sunny things to toss on for beautiful days, to tromp around the gardens and hills of Mallorca in. How perfect a jumper from Isabel would be (her prints this spring are PERFECT for island living), or an easy, pretty dress from Miss Bruno! In Seattle, a wardrobe like this just wouldn't be appropriate - so while I'm here I feel like I should be living out my secret bright print and breezy beach clothing dreams.

Ashley and I had the day off today, so we went into "the big city" on the island, Palma*. I kept seeing these sandals everywhere - it appears they are a typical Mallorcan (is Mallorcan a word? Have I made that up? Spell check doesn't seem to like it) sandal. I almost bought some because I think they're pretty cute, but I decided to wait a little while. Then, I was clicking through Maryam Nassir Zedah and La Garçonne just a little while ago (not that you couldn't tell/this is how I unwind) and saw these Rachel Comey sandals that look pretty similar.

That sealed the deal. Next time I see those sandals, I'm dishing out the measly 30 euro and making them mine (too bad the quality won't be quite as nice, nor are they quite as pretty - but that's ok!). If only it were so easy to mimic the rest. But, maybe it is? We are planning to visit a Sunday market soon in a smaller town near La Serranía and I'm sure I'll uncover some gems!

*I will write about this once I'm caught up from last week - I'd like to keep everything in chronological order if I can.

1. Jane Jumpsuit, Isabel Marant, 2. Buny Top and Jerry Pants, Isabel Marant, 3. Ion Square Bag, Eatable of Many Orders - sooo cool! 4. Hana Jumpsuit, Isabel Marant, 5. Jobia Dress, Isabel Marant, 6. Pocket Tote Bag, Eatable of Many Orders, 7. Barrel Hat, Rachel Comey (not pictured, but still on my wish list.)

  1. Mallorcan is a word! And they are traditional Spanish Mallorcan sandals. Manorca is the island nearby and much more rural than Mallorca, and they actually originate from there. The bottom is made from rubber tires! That's why they never wear out. I highly suggest buying a pair and wearing them in the water, it helps them mold to your feet. They are so comfortable and never fall off.

Maria Cornejo loved them so much she made her own version, but made still in the traditional way and in Spain but with a small wedge --- Kind of a long link but...http://www.google.com/search?q=maria+cornejo+sandals&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&prmd=imvnso&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=GahiT-egA8mP0gGHua2xCA&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CEEQ_AUoAQ&biw=1426&bih=780

  3. oh, dont feel guilty about your thoughts on being appropriately dressed (now, that's a nice lie to cover my consumer needs). the mallorcas are fabulous, get yourself a pair. i used to live in barcelona and everyone was wearing them, and i never bought myself a pair - which leaves me with regret. so grab your chance :) i am loving all your photos and adventures in spain.

I don't - and I rarely do! So yes, I will definitely be getting some.

  8. Those are essentially the exact same sandal! I think it's so funny that they are copied by so many high-end designers when they're literally EVERYWHERE here and so cheap!
